How we think about building products
A short, opinionated note on the principles that make our products feel the way they do.
By The BANIN team
We keep a short list of principles and actually use them. Not values on a wall — the reasons a decision goes one way and not the other.
Craft over hype
We care about the details users feel even when they can’t name them: the spacing, the wording of an error, the moment a file opens cleanly on the machine it was made for. Clever demos fade; craft is what people come back to.
Simple things that work
The simplest approach that solves the problem, done well, beats the elaborate one almost every time. We spend our complexity budget carefully, and only where it buys the user something real.
Honest by default
Straight talk — with our users, our partners, and each other. We state limits before capabilities, and we don’t ship dark patterns. A product you can trust is worth more than one that merely impresses.
“Move quickly, but on purpose — clear about what we’re building and why.”
None of this is novel. Living by it, consistently, when it’s inconvenient — that’s the whole job.

One design, every machine
